Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City are the three promoted teams in the Premier League 2026/27. Five matchweeks in, Hull City sit eighth on eight points, Ipswich Town eleventh on six and Coventry City eighteenth on three, so the trio have taken 17 of the 45 points available to them.
That spread is the story. One of them has beaten Manchester United and drawn at Stamford Bridge, one has won two of five, and one has scored a single goal in five matches and still won away at Nottingham Forest. Which teams were promoted for 2026/27?
Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City were promoted from the Championship for the 2026/27 Premier League season. They replaced West Ham United, Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers, who were relegated at the end of 2025/26.
Only three clubs come up each season, which is worth stating plainly, because Leeds United and Sunderland are often lumped in with them. Both of those were promoted a year earlier and are now in their second season back. The three genuinely new arrivals had been away for very different lengths of time: 25 years for Coventry, nine for Hull, and one for Ipswich.
How did each of them come up?
Coventry City won the Championship title with 95 points and Ipswich Town took the second automatic place on 84, while Hull City came up sixth through the play-offs. Hull beat Middlesbrough 1-0 in the play-off final at Wembley on 23 May 2026, Oli McBurnie scoring in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
The route was unusual even by play-off standards. Southampton had finished fourth and won through to the final, then an EFL independent disciplinary commission expelled them from the play-offs and docked them four points on 19 May 2026, after the club admitted spying on three opponents' training sessions. One of the three was Ipswich Town, in April 2026. Middlesbrough, the club Southampton had beaten in the semi-final, took their place at Wembley, and Hull won it with what the Guardian's minute-by-minute logged as a 90+5 goal.
Frank Lampard manages Coventry, Gary O'Neil took over at Ipswich, and Sergej Jakirović leads Hull. Of the three grounds, only Coventry Building Society Arena holds more than 32,000; Portman Road holds 30,056 and the MKM Stadium 24,983.

Positions and points match the official Premier League table after matchweek 5, and the live table on this site. Every other figure here was rebuilt from the 50 match records played so far, which is the only way to be sure the columns agree with each other.
Two things stand out. Coventry have the fewest goals in the division, one in five matches, which is a long way from the Premier League top scorer race at the other end of the table. Hull have conceded four, the joint fourth-best defensive record in the league, better than Chelsea, Manchester United and Newcastle.
Why is Coventry's start so hard to read?
Coventry City are eighteenth on three points, but they drew the hardest opening five fixtures in the division. Their five opponents have taken 50 points between them, and three of them (Arsenal, Manchester City and Brighton) are currently in the top six.
Read the fixture list and the picture changes. Coventry lost 0-3 at Arsenal, 0-1 at Manchester City and 0-5 at home to Brighton, a side who six days later beat the champions 3-0, then went to the City Ground and won. Jay Dasilva's 55th-minute goal beat Nottingham Forest 1-0, their first Premier League win since 2001, and the assist came from goalkeeper Carl Rushworth. Nottingham Forest had 62.6% of the ball and 24 shots to Coventry's 10, and lost.
What has not improved is the scoring. One goal in five matches is the lowest in the division, and all three of their points have come away from home. What has Hull City done better than the other two?
Hull City have defended better than any promoted side in recent memory, and it is the reason they are eighth. They did not concede a goal in their first three matches back in the Premier League, beating Manchester United 2-0 through Semi Ajayi and a Nobel Mendy header, winning 1-0 at Coventry and drawing 0-0 with Aston Villa.
They did it without the ball. Against Manchester United, Hull had 28.5% possession and eight shots, and won by two, a result the Manchester derby preview treated as the clearest evidence of how United had started. At Stamford Bridge they had 32.2% and drew 2-2, Mohamed Belloumi scoring twice inside seven minutes, the second from outside the box, the two goals that put him on the season scoring list. Then came the first defeat, 2-1 at Newcastle United, where Hull actually had 21 shots to Newcastle's 12 and Konstantinos Tzolakis saved a first-half penalty before Mohamed-Ali Cho pulled one back.
The caution is obvious: a side that concedes 71.5% of the ball to Manchester United and wins is relying on a margin that can close quickly. Where does Ipswich Town's second attempt stand?
Ipswich Town are eleventh on six points, with two wins, no draws and three defeats. They have scored seven, more than the other two promoted clubs, and conceded eleven, more than any side above them in the table.
This is their second crack at the division after one season away, and Striver reported a squad overhaul of more than £150 million under Gary O'Neil. The clearest evidence of what that bought is the trip to Selhurst Park: Ipswich won 3-2 at Crystal Palace with headers from Emersonn and Leif Davis and a 90th-minute finish from substitute Zian Flemming, against a Crystal Palace side down to ten men from the 34th minute. The clearest evidence of the problem is the 5-2 at Old Trafford and a 0-1 at Everton in which they did not score.

Which of them look like staying up?
On current rates Hull City would finish on 61 points, Ipswich Town on 46 and Coventry City on 23, against the 40 points that has historically been treated as safety. Five matches is far too small a sample to trust those projections, but they do show the size of the gap the bottom club has to close.
Three things are worth weighing before anyone writes Coventry off. First, the fixture difficulty above: their opening five was the hardest in the league, and it eases. Second, the recent precedent goes the other way from the old pattern. Leeds United and Sunderland came up last season and are both into a second season back, having broken a run in which the previous six promoted clubs all went straight down again. Leeds are fifth as it stands. Third, one goal in five is a genuine problem that no fixture list fixes on its own.
Hull's position is the most secure and the least proven. Eight points from five is a survival rate, but it was built on three clean sheets and two low-possession performances, and the run of opponents they have faced is the softest of the three. Final verdict
Five matches in, the three promoted clubs are not one story but three. Hull City have the points and the clean sheets and the thinnest margin. Ipswich Town have the goals at both ends and look the most likely to settle into mid-table. Coventry City have the worst record in the division and the best excuse for it, and one away win that says more about them than the three defeats to the top six do.
Matchweek 6 from 10 October is the first weekend where all three face opponents outside the top seven, so it is the first honest test of which of these starts was real.
